The Greenbat project is integrated into the Graphene Flagship programme (Core 3) and aims to introduce a new generation of anode material in large automotive lithium ion batteries (LIBs) replacing commonly-used graphite (with a practical capacity of ~330 Ah/kg) by an advanced silicon/graphene composite with an overall capacity of ~1200 Ah/kg on material level.

The project is based on the results that were achieved in previous phases of the Graphene Flagship. All targeted specifications for material, cell and module will be competitive with foreseen state-of-the-art (SotA) modules in 2025. The project is structured in four tasks, dealing with the manufacturing of the advanced silicon/graphene composite, upscaling of electrode fabrication, assembly of prototype cells, manufacturing of a battery module, simulation and electrochemical testing.
